
Missoula Buried Its Chinatown, Then Made Up a Story About Tunnels
For sixty years, Missoula had a Chinatown on West Main — laundries, stores, a temple upstairs, families raising kids in local schools, and a cemetery near Mount Jumbo — until exclusion laws and a hostile press wore it down to nothing. The city then paved over the burial ground and invented a folklore about Chinese tunnels that were never dug, while the real neighborhood sat buried under a downtown block until a 2019 construction crew hit it by accident.
